As of January 28, 2022, each sitter’s identity is verified through Berbix. Prior to January 28, 2022, sitters’ identities were authenticated through Experian. Platforms use a variety of tools to verify user identities. As technology evolves, the process constantly improves.
When a sitter joins our site, their identity is verified through Berbix using their legal ID and a live selfie. We also routinely screen through Family Watchdog (a source of registered sex offender information). It is important to keep in mind that sex offender searches are subject to limitations and may not reflect an individual’s entire sex offender history.
Background checks can be processed on sitters at any point to ensure the most current information, which is why we do not require background checks to be completed by sitters at the point of registration. In order to see the recency of a sitter’s completed a background check, look for a dated badge displayed on a sitter’s profile. We strongly recommend processing background checks on sitters prior to hiring them, and you can find additional information about that process here.
Because Sittercity is not an agency, we do not interview sitters, check references, or verify reported certifications or credentials. We do, however, empower parents with these tools to make informed decisions. To learn more about requesting sitter references through our partnership with Crosschq, click here.
